Workshop Description

In the hours of night, the outside world is cast with an unusual allure, evoking sensations that cease to exist with luminous sunlight. Familiar surroundings become less defined and open to ambiguous impressions of solitude, comfort, and the curiosity of the unknown. Let’s capture the mystery of night in painting!

In this class we’ll create 3 night paintings. In the process we will cover:

  • Logic and techniques of mixing subtle color tones with a limited color palette,
  • How to create composition that promotes reflection and contemplation,
  • How to use different underpainting colors to enhance the dominate colors in the painting,
  • How to combine saturated and muted colors, warm and cool color shifts to enhance the mood and narrative of the painting,
  • How to apply transparent glazing technique to create luminous colors.
  •

You can create paintings using the same references as Wayne’s demo or create paintings from your own references. More advanced students are encouraged to create paintings using their own reference.

This online workshop will include painting demos, student work feedback sessions, slideshow presentations, and eye training exercises. These combinations of activities are designed to help refine your painting techniques and observation skills. Photo references will be provided for all painting assignments. Students are welcome to bring their own photo references for their own paintings.

Online workshop students will have access to download a video file of the painting demo to refer to so they can paint along at home at their own pace. There will be critiques at the beginning of some of the classes.

Online workshop students are responsible for knowing how to:

  • Log into Zoom. Be sure to test this before the first class session.
  • Send email or post photos of their painting to Wayne for feedback.

  • Workshop level: intermediate to advanced
